How-To Apply Multi-Purpose Acrylic Wax - Residential Wax Only

Waxing is one of the most important facets in maintaining interior decorative concrete, but does not replace the need for sealer on your decorative concrete. While sealer penetrates into the pores of your concrete and maintains your floor’s color, wax is a topical coat designed to be used over a sealed surface. By using our acrylic wax you will be creating a sacrificial barrier between your sealed floor and the harsh world around it. If properly waxed and maintained you shouldn’t need to reseal your floor again. As compared to outside surfaces, which shouldn’t be waxed and must be resealed every few years, an interior floor can be protected by a shield of acrylic wax.

Surface Preparation
Your first step when waxing your floor will be to thoroughly clean your surface of all dirt and debris. (To clean your surface you can mop the floor with warm soapy water, or a light bleach mixture, etc.) Do not use harsh chemicals such as Xylene, Lacquer Thinner, Adhesive Remover, etc, these chemicals will remove the sealer on your decorative concrete. You must first mop with your cleaning-agent/water mixture, next mop with water only, and lastly a dry mop to ensure all soap and dirt residue has been cleaned from the surface. Repeat the above cleaning process if floor remains dirty.

Applying the Wax
After your surface has dried you can apply the wax using either a sponge mop or lamb’s wool applicator. The thinner the wax is applied the stronger your shield of acrylic wax. At one thin coat a gallon of wax should give you approximately 2,000 square feet of coverage. For application we recommend either a sponge mop or wax applicator. When applying wax for the very first time you should put down 3-4 thin coats. If reapplying wax see the below section. For the very first application simply apply the first coat out thinly and let dry, after the first coat has dried apply the second, once the second has dried apply the third, and if necessary apply a fourth thin coat. To limit possible streaking you can apply the first coat East to West and the second coat North to South. Before allowing any traffic on your floor you should test if the wax has dried by applying pressure to the surface with your fingernail, if the surface dents your wax will require more time to dry but if hard it should be suitable for traffic.

Reapplying Wax
Depending on the conditions your waxed surface is exposed to, you should apply one additional thin coat of wax approximately every 3-8 months. Before reapplying wax, clean the surface as is stated in the section “Surface Preparation.” Now you are ready to apply an additional thin coat. This coat should be applied as is stated in the above section “Applying Wax,” with the only difference being one coat of wax is required when reapplying.

Thanks and enjoy your beautiful surface!

FAQ on Multi-Purpose Acrylic Wax

Why not just wax instead of seal your floor?
Wax does not replace the need for sealer on your decorative concrete. Sealer penetrates deep into the pores of your concrete, protecting your surface and maintaining your concrete’s true color. Unlike sealer, wax is a topical coat that’s designed to be used over a sealed surface. Wax protects the sealer while sealer protects the actual surface.

How does wax change the appearance?
Adding wax to your surface gives it a glossier look. By using wax you gain greater control over the gloss level of your surface, with every coat of wax increasing the gloss level.

How does wax work?
Our wax is acrylic based and when applied will form a cohesive matrix of acrylic across your surface. This hard layer of acrylic will serve as a sacrificial barrier against the extreme conditions surrounding your decorative surface.

How long should the wax dry before being walked on?
Our wax should only take a matter of hours before being dry enough. You can test the surface by applying pressure to see if any dents were created. If no dents appear, your surface is suitable for foot traffic.

How long should I wait before adding another coat?
For every application following the first, you will need to wait for an average of 3-8 months before adding an additional coat. The length of time between each application depends on many different variables; such as gloss level desired, amount of traffic, climate, etc.

Can I use your wax outside?
We highly discourage anyone from using our wax in an outdoor application, because conditions outside are too harsh and unpredictable. If applied outside your waxed surface will probably turn milky white.
