Deco Gel Patina Stains are composed
of a unique formulation of blended metallic salts,
in an acidic, water
– based gelled solution. These metallic salts
penetrate and react with the chemical substance in
concrete to deposit the colors into the pores of the
concrete. Each color is composed of a complex proprietary
formulation containing no pigments or resins. This
formulation creates a more effective chemical reaction
and deeper colorization.
Limitations:
Deco Gel Patina Stains are not
to be used in order to hide or cover blemishes or errors
in concrete. In certain cases, the stains may accent
finishing marks or blemishes in concrete in an unpredictable
manner. All the Deco Gel Patina Stains available require
various times of activation in order to achieve optimal
performance. Because of this, when stains are first
applied, they appear different than their end result.
Use the chart in the column below to reference color,
required time as well as first appearance of color.
Each individual concrete substrate will create different
effects that may appear significantly different from
the color shown on the chart. Some of the many factors
include, but are not limited to: finishing technique,
mix designs, curing practices, age, condition, porosity
and base color of concrete.
Due to the transparent color Deco Gel Patina
Stains leave on the surface of the concrete, There is an
element of uncertainty and unpredictability in its final
appearance, which can include uneven or molten effects.
This is however not considered to be a defect, but the
reason this method of coloration is chosen. In particular,
our blue and green stains react to the presence of moisture
and create black spots and should not be applied to a wet
or damp surface. It is always strongly recommended to test
the stain on the surface in an inconspicuous place.
Coverage:
Coverage will vary widely depending on the porosity, texture,
application techniques, age of concrete, number of applications
and various other factors. A typical gallon of Deco Gel
Patina Stain will cover approximately 150 square feet.
Application
& Color Effects:
There are various designs and effects achievable using the
Deco Gel Patina Stain System which is why a test sample is
highly recommended and nearly a necessity. When preparing
the area to be stained, make sure not to perform an acid
wash to clean the surface. Doing this will inhibit the Deco
Gel Patina Stain and it will remove the lime necessary for
reaction and optimal colorization. Experienced applicators
may want to sand the surface prior to staining using a palm
sander with 50 or 100 grit mesh or paper. The
function this will serve is to open the pores of the concrete
so staining is easier and colorization is more thorough.
Surfaces must be completely dry and free of dust before application.
The application of the stain will vary according
to size, design and desired effect. To apply Deco Gel Patina
Stain, a foam brush or foam roller is the most common tool.
Both of these items will give you a varied effect with
diverse colors and hues. For a more diverse effect, use
a plastic drywall trowel for application.
Deco Gel Patina Stains are typically applied
with one even coat, while working the color into the surface
using the above mentioned foam brush or foam roller. When
you first apply the stain, you should notice a “fizzing”
reaction to the concrete. This is the metallic salts and
acid reacting with the concrete surface and is a sign that
the surface is accepting the stain. A second coat may be
applied if needed. Do not rinse the surface during or between
applications, but allow the color to remain on the surface
for the allocated amount of time referred in the previous
column to achieve optimal results. After the stain has been
applied and has sat on the surface for the amount of time
allocated, you need to neutralize the surface using 1 tablespoon
sodium bicarbonate per gallon of water and apply directly
to the surface. This is not exact, and you can use more bicarbonate
if necessary. This will neutralize the stain and give you
an idea of the final color. The surface needs to be thoroughly
scrubbed using soap and water if necessary to remove all
residue.
After the surface is completely dry and
neutralized, you can apply a sealer to protect the area
and highlight your freshly stained surface. We recommend
using Sprayable Satin Finish Concrete Sealer or Krystal
Kote High Performance Cross-Linking Water Based Concrete
Sealer. Both of these products can be applied using a foam
brush, lambs wool applicator or a Padco™
“Floor Coater”. It is best to apply at least
two coats of sealer to the surface to protect the finish
and keep your concrete looking new for years. Sealer must
be reapplied every 1 to 3 years depending on wear and weather.
Shelf Life:
The typical
shelf life of our Deco Gel Patina Stains is two years
from the date of purchase. Containers should always
be stored out of direct sunlight, tightly closed and
upright. Always rotate your inventory when storing.
