Mr. Ferrara of Dover Plains, NY designed, built and stained this extraordinary concrete fire pit and dining table himself. <\/span><\/p>\n

Step 1: Construction<\/b><\/h4>\n

<\/b>\u201cThe first thing I did was build the form out of wood. I then sanded and table sawed a piece of 2 x 6 to half an inch thick and screwed it to the center on the bottom of the form. This is how you get the cutout to add a rotating design to your table by creating a space where you can add rocks, marbles, glass, fire, etc.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“The bottom of the form is actually the top of the table. The seams of the form and the centerpiece of wood were then caulked to give a more rounded edge. The form was poured around a metal grate using <\/span>5000 psi concrete countertop mix<\/span> for a strong slab at 1 1\/2 in. thickness.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”30453″ img_size=”600×400″ alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”30452″ img_size=”600×400″ alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”30454″ img_size=”600×400″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]High Zirconia Alkali-Resistant Chopped Fiberglass\u00a0strengthens concrete and helps prevent cracking from shrinkage. When both\u00a0Chopped Fiberglass\u00a0and\u00a0Fiberglass Net\u00a0are used together in a concrete countertop application, steel reinforcement is not necessary.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”89836″ img_size=”425×200″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow” onclick=”custom_link” img_link_target=”_blank” link=”https:\/\/directcolors.com\/chopped-fiberglass-reinforcement\/”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Step 2: Surface Preparation<\/b><\/h4>\n

\u201cAfter curing and removing the form, I applied Direct Colors <\/span>High Gloss, Water Based Acrylic Sealer<\/a><\/span> on the bottom of the tabletop. Once dry, I flipped the table over to the top side and removed the 2 x 6 wooden frame to reveal the pocket in the center of the table. I went over the table with a cement slurry to fill in the pinholes and create a rough but flat surface to imitate a raw stone finish. I finally sanded the top and edges and allowed to fully dry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3: Acid Staining and Sealing<\/b><\/h4>\n

\u201cUsing the <\/span>Coffee Brown<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Avocado <\/span>Acid Stains<\/a>, I sprayed an oval pattern a few times, let dry somewhat and repeated. After the processing time was complete, I neutralized and cleaned with water, dried again, and applied the High Gloss Water-Based Acrylic Sealer. I then enlisted a strong friend who helped me finally place the table on its base in the dining room. The base was designed using stained and lacquered pressure treated 4 x 4\u2019s.\u00a0 After centering the table on its base and breathing two sighs of relief, I used the <\/span>Countertop Wax <\/span>to finish the concrete. I then filled the pocket with <\/span>Crushed Glass Aggregate <\/span>and added the fire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
