The four dose steps

Dose is measured in pounds of pigment per 94 lb sack of cement. On a standard five-sack cubic yard, multiply by five. The shade code is the dose — 102-5 Smokestack means base color 102 at 5 lb per 94 lb sack.

How do I choose a concrete pigment color?

Choose a base color first, then a dose rate; the two together produce the finished shade. Each shade shown on this page lists the exact dose that produces it, so you can compare the effect of different pigment amounts before ordering.

How much concrete pigment should I add?

Use the dose listed for your selected shade and multiply it by the number of 94 lb cement sacks in the batch. The calculator on this page performs that calculation and recommends the appropriate bag combination. Dose pigment by cement weight, not by the total weight of the concrete.

What is the difference between powder and liquid concrete pigment?

Both types produce integral color, but powder is dry concentrated pigment while liquid or paste pigment is pre-dispersed for easier measuring and distribution. Their weights are not interchangeable, so use the calculator and instructions for the specific product you are using.

Will integral concrete color wear off?

Integral concrete color cannot peel or flake off like a surface coating because the pigment runs through the concrete. However, the apparent color can still change because of curing conditions, efflorescence, water ratio, surface finishing, sealer, weathering or the selected pigment chemistry.

Does concrete pigment fade outdoors?

Outdoor concrete color can change in appearance even when the pigment itself is light-stable. Pigment chemistry, efflorescence, curing, weathering, sealer and surface wear can all affect the color you see. Check the selected color's ASTM information and approve a fully cured outdoor test panel before the final pour.

Can adding too much pigment weaken concrete?

An excessive pigment dose can affect water demand, workability and the final performance of the concrete. Stay within the product-specific dosage range, keep the water-to-cement ratio consistent and test the proposed mix before production.

How do I mix concrete pigment without streaks?

For an even color, distribute powder pigment completely through the dry ingredients before adding the final mix water, unless the product instructions specify a different sequence. Keep pigment dose, water content, mixing time and batching order consistent from one batch to the next.

How does cement color affect the finished pigment color?

Cement color directly changes the finished pigment color because it forms the background of the mix. White cement generally produces brighter, cleaner shades, while gray cement creates darker or more muted results. Sand, aggregate, water ratio and finish also influence the cured color.

Which concrete pigments meet ASTM C979?

The colors identified as ASTM C979 on this page are accompanied by a statement for that pigment formulation. Check the designation for the specific color you select rather than assuming every formulation has the same status, and retain the statement when the project requires a specification submittal.

What size pigment bags can I buy?

Direct Colors pigment powder is sold online in 1 lb, 5 lb, 10 lb and 25 lb bags. Availability varies by color and inventory, and orders over 100 lb are quoted as bulk.

Why does the cured slab look different from the color on screen?

Cured concrete usually appears lighter than the wet mix, and monitors, ambient lighting, cement, aggregate and the surface finish can shift the color further. Judge the result from a representative, fully cured test panel rather than from the wet mix or an on-screen image.

Should I test the pigment before pouring the full slab?

Yes. Make and fully cure a representative test panel before committing to the full pour. Use the same cement, sand, aggregate, water ratio, pigment dose, mixing sequence, finish, curing method and sealer planned for the project.

Can you match a color from a plan or specification?

Yes. Send us the cement and sand intended for the work and our color lab will develop a match for your approval. Confirm the match with a representative, fully cured sample before specifying or placing the full order.

Do the powder and liquid pigment color codes mean the same thing?

No. The two lines use separate code sets, so a liquid pigment code is not the powder code carrying the same number. Numbers such as 101, 102 and 206 appear in both lines and are not interchangeable. Confirm the code against the line you are ordering, and approve a fully cured test panel before moving a project from one line to the other.

Should I use powder or liquid pigment for my project?

Choose by the color you need, the size of the pour and whether the job carries a pigment specification. The powder line offers the wider color range and is the line covered by our ASTM C979 statement of conformance. The liquid line is pre-dispersed for easier measuring and distribution across a smaller set of colors. Dose rates are not interchangeable between the two lines, so select one line for a project and stay with it.

Can I use powder and liquid pigment in the same batch?

Use one pigment line per project rather than combining them in a batch. The two lines carry separate color codes and separate loading ladders, so a combined batch has no published dose to work from and the result cannot be reproduced from one batch to the next. If the color you need exists only in the other line, contact us before batching.

How many colors does each pigment line offer?

The powder line covers 34 color codes and the liquid line covers 7. Powder is the wider palette and includes the iron oxide earth tones alongside greens, blues and specialty shades. Liquid covers red, yellow, carbon black, charcoal, chromium green, blue and white. If the shade you want is not in the liquid set, ask us whether a powder code can produce it.

How much ColorBlast Pro pigment paste should I add?

Dose pigment paste by the weight of paste per 94 lb sack of cement, not by the weight of pigment. Color codes 101, 119, 204, 205 and 206 use a ladder of 1, 3, 5 and 7 lb of paste per 94 lb sack. Color codes 102 and 201 use a ladder of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 lb per 94 lb sack. The top of each color's own ladder is the maximum for that color, and no single maximum is published for the line. Multiply the chosen rate by the number of 94 lb sacks in your batch.

What sizes does liquid concrete pigment come in?

ColorBlast Pro pigment paste is sold in 2 lb and 44 lb net weights. Weight is the only unit in which this product is sold and dosed, so order and batch it by pounds rather than by volume. Quantities above 44 lb are quoted individually, with freight quoted by delivery location.

How should liquid concrete pigment be stored?

Store pigment paste above 37 degrees Fahrenheit and do not let it freeze in transit, in storage or on site. Paste that has frozen should not be used. Keep it in a moderately cool, dry, well ventilated area away from direct sources of heat, and use unopened packs within 6 months of purchase.

Can Carbon Black pigment paste be used in air-entrained or fully exposed concrete?

Color code 102 Carbon Black is recommended for interior and protected applications and for concrete that is not air entrained. Carbon black is not recommended for air-entrained concrete. If your mix design calls for air entrainment, or the work is fully exposed, contact us before selecting a code and approve a fully cured test panel before the pour.

Can I use liquid pigment on a job with a pigment specification?

Check what the specification requires before ordering. Our signed statement of conformance to ASTM C979 covers the color codes listed in the concrete pigment powder data sheet and does not extend to the ColorBlast Pro paste line. If the project specifies ASTM C979, select a covered powder code and request the statement for your submittal.
