Gray Portland cement has a color of its own, and it mutes every pigment mixed into it. Switch to white and that muting goes away. What most people expect next is that the color gets lighter — and measured across 66 shade pairs, that is wrong more often than it is right.
The same pigment on both bases

Look at 202-5. On gray it is a washed-out sky blue; on white it is a deep, vivid blue — 16 points darker and dramatically more saturated. Nobody would call that lighter, and nobody would call it worse. Then look at 102-7, which goes the other way entirely: 15 points lighter on white, and slightly less saturated.
Why the base does this
You are not coloring a neutral background. Gray cement is gray in the mix, and that gray stays visible in the result — it dilutes the pigment’s hue and pulls everything toward the middle. Take it away and the pigment’s own color is what you see, which can read deeper rather than paler, because saturation and lightness are not the same thing.
The effect is largest where gray does the most damage — the blues, greens and yellows. Earth tones, which are closer to the cement’s own color to begin with, move least.
Which base to choose
- White cement when the color has to be clean and saturated — a blue that reads as blue, a green that is not sage, a yellow that is not buff.
- Gray cement when you want muted and earthy. The gray is doing that work for you, and it is the cheaper of the two.
- Do not switch base to change lightness. On this evidence it is a coin toss which way lightness goes. If you want it deeper, change the dose step or the base code — see why more pigment stops making concrete darker.
White 205 is the exception
White pigment on gray cement has to overcome the base rather than tint it, which is why 205 behaves differently across the dose range from every other color, and why it is the one shade to discuss with Direct Colors before committing a dose.
How these figures were arrived at
Chips were cast at the same code and the same dose on both bases and sampled for color, then compared in Lab — lightness and saturation separately, which is the only way to see that they move independently. Only pairs where both chips were measured directly are used here; derived values are excluded.
They indicate what the base does. They do not predict your slab. Your cement brand, sand, aggregate, water, finishing and curing all move the result — so choose the base here, then approve the color from a cured panel in your own materials.
Common questions
Does white cement make concrete pigment lighter?
Not reliably. Across 66 measured shade pairs cast at the same code and dose on both bases, only 29 were lighter on white — fewer than half. What white cement does consistently is make the color cleaner: 41 of the 66 were more saturated. Twenty-four were darker and more saturated at the same time.
Why does gray cement change the color at all?
Because gray cement has a color of its own and mutes every pigment mixed into it. You are not coloring a neutral background, you are coloring a gray one, and that gray is still visible in the result. White cement removes it, which lets the pigment's own hue show.
Which base should I choose?
Choose white when you want a clean, saturated color, especially in the blues, greens and yellows where gray does the most damage. Choose gray when you want a muted, earthy result — it is doing that work for you, and it is the cheaper cement. What you should not do is assume white will simply lighten the shade.
Are the published color charts on gray or white?
Gray. Every shade rendering Direct Colors publishes is produced on gray Portland cement, so if your job is on white the chart is showing you the muted version. Expect more saturation than the chart shows, and do not assume the lightness will match.
Does White 205 behave the same way?
No, it is the special case. White pigment has to overcome the gray of the cement rather than tint it, so its behavior across the dose range differs from every other color. Discuss 205 with Direct Colors before committing a dose.
