Pigment colors concrete by coating the cement particles. That one fact explains the whole behavior: there is a finite amount of cement in any mix, and once it is coated, more pigment has less and less left to do. You keep paying for pigment and you stop getting depth back — which is why the published range stops where it does.
Where the published range stops
The dose ladder runs 1, 3, 5 and 7 lb of pigment per 94 lb sack of cement — 1.1%, 3.2%, 5.3% and 7.4% of cementitious weight. The hard ceiling is 10%, which is 9.4 lb per sack.
- Above the top step there is no recommendation. The ladder ends at 7 lb because that is where the published range ends, not because 7.1 lb is forbidden — but nothing above it is recommended either.
- Above the ceiling, loading can affect strength, set time and finish. That is the reason the ceiling exists, and it is a concrete problem rather than a color problem.
Direct Colors publishes no measured point at which color stops deepening. The four steps and the ceiling are what is published. Treat the top of the ladder as the practical end of the range rather than assuming there is useful headroom above it — the cost is certain and the return is not.
The cement is a participant, not a background
The other half of the answer is that you are not coloring a blank. Gray Portland cement has its own color and mutes every pigment, most obviously the bright ones. White Portland at the same code and the same dose reads cleaner and more saturated. So two slabs at an identical dose can be visibly different depths purely because of the cement.
White 205 is the clearest illustration. It has to overcome the gray of the cement rather than tint it, which is why it behaves differently across the ladder from every other color — and why it is the one shade to discuss with Direct Colors before committing a dose.
Supplementary cementitious materials pull the same way: fly ash and slag lighten the finished result, while still counting toward the cementitious weight the dose is calculated on.
If you want it darker, these still work
Once the dose has stopped repaying you, every remaining lever is somewhere else:
- Pick a darker base code at a middle step rather than a lighter one at the top. Depth built into the pigment beats depth chased with quantity, and a mid-step shade is easier to repeat.
- Use white Portland cement where the color needs to be clean and saturated rather than muted.
- Ask the supplier to hold the fly ash down, since it lightens the result.
- Seal it. Sealers, cures and surface treatments generally darken the apparent color, and solvent-based sealers most of all. This is the cheapest depth available and it is often the one people forget before deciding the slab is too pale.
- Put color on the surface. A stain, a dye or a tinted sealer over integrally colored concrete gives depth that no dose can. Pigment for an even base, a topical for the top.
Prove it on two panels, not on the pour
The way to settle this is not arithmetic, it is a pair of panels. Cast the shade you are considering at its published step, and cast the alternative — the darker base, or the white cement, or the same shade sealed — and look at them cured, dry and finished the way the job will be finished.
