Acid Stain

Outdoor Concrete Kitchen Countertop, Start to Finish

Art D. built this outdoor kitchen countertop himself, evenings and weekends, over about two months — and had never cast a concrete countertop or used acid stain before either one. It is the most complete start-to-finish sequence in the countertop cluster.

Note on results: every photo here is a real Direct Colors customer project. Acid stain is reactive and every countertop mix behaves differently, so test on an offcut or a hidden section before you commit — on a surface this small and this visible, it matters more than anywhere else.

Framing and forming

The cabinetry came first — metal studs skinned with backer board — then the forms, with bull-nose templates for the edges. Everything from here was hand-mixed and hand-trowelled.

Staining and sealing

Malayan Buff as the base coat, English Red over it, Cola last — then a polyurethane countertop sealer. Art ordered an acid stain trial kit first, which is what turned a first-timer into someone who now wants to acid stain everything.

“I had never done a concrete countertop before so I did a lot of research on YouTube, especially when it came to the acid staining, also a first for me. I am hooked!! I had previously ‘painted’ and have done an epoxy-type finish on a garage floor but had never done acid staining. You have created a monster!! Realizing how simple the process is and the beauty of the results, I will now forever do acid staining on my concrete projects.”
