Layering Acid Stains: Wet-on-Wet vs. Wet-on-Dry

Blending acid-stain colors is a creative, forgiving way to add character to concrete — from a dreamy, washed-out look to a bold, marbled finish. The key is the state of the previous layer when you add the next color: a dry layer gives crisp borders, a partially dry layer softens them, and a still-wet layer lets colors blend seamlessly. Here are the two core techniques — wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry — with a real customer floor that used both.

Wet-on-wet: seamless, marbled blends

Wet-on-wet means applying each color while the previous layer is still wet, so they bleed together into the marbled finish acid stain is known for — much like watercolor. There’s no waiting between layers, which saves time and gives you more control. The one thing to plan: because the colors bleed, edges between contrasting shades stay soft. Start with the lightest color and work toward the darkest so dark stains don’t overpower the light areas. A spray bottle gives precise control on smaller areas; a pump sprayer is more practical for larger floors.

Wet-on-dry: defined borders and accents

Wet-on-dry means letting each layer dry fully (at least five hours, depending on weather) before the next. It produces well-defined borders between colors — ideal for patterns, designs, and controlled dark accents, and it pairs naturally with the veining technique. Because each dried layer is a fresh canvas, test your next color in a discreet spot first to preview how it reacts over the layer beneath.

Pro tip from Bob Harris: “To soften the edge between colors, apply water to the areas of the base coat you want to retain, then spray the next layer of acid stain into the dry spots — just barely overlapping the wet areas. The water softens the hard edge, creating a very smooth, subtle transition between the colors.”
