How to Restore Faded Stamped Concrete: A Step-by-Step Guide
by Justin Richardson
Stamped concrete is a popular choice for patios, driveways, pool decks, and walkways due to its durability and attractive appearance. However, over time, stamped concrete can experience discoloration and fading. If your stamped concrete surface has lost its color, don’t worry – it can be restored to its original condition.
In this guide, we will show you how to restore faded stamped concrete, addressing common causes of concrete discoloration and providing step-by-step instructions for bringing back the beauty of your patio, driveway, pool deck, or walkway.
Steps to recolor faded stamped concrete:
Time needed: 1 day
-
-
Clean the stamped concrete thoroughly using a wet/dry vacuum to ensure that the surface is completely dry and free of dirt and debris.
-
Before use, remove filters from the pump-up sprayer and shake the Antiquing™ thoroughly before pouring it into the sprayer.
-
Apply the Antiquing™ stain to the surface using slightly circular motions with irregular overlaps while shaking the sprayer tank from side to side often to prevent color from settling.
-
Apply additional coats of stain without waiting for the first coat to dry.
-
Allow the final coat of antiquing stain to dry for at least 8 hours.
-
Once the stain has fully dried, apply a solvent-based acrylic concrete sealer to protect the color from fading in the future.
-
By following these steps, you can fix stamped concrete color and protect it from further fading. Just be sure to choose the right staining product based on the surface conditions of your concrete and the desired final result.
Does stamped concrete crack?
Yes, stamped concrete can crack due to various reasons such as improper preparation of the base or subgrade before pouring the concrete, improper curing of the concrete, lack of control joints, movement or settling of the soil beneath the concrete, exposure to harsh weather conditions, exposure to heavy loads, inadequate reinforcement of the concrete, shrinkage of the concrete as it dries and improper mixing of the concrete. But no worries, you can cover and mask the cracks with concrete patching compound and Antiquing stain to restore the beauty of your stamped concrete again.

Can you change the color of stamped concrete?
Yes, it is possible to change the color of stamped concrete using stains or tinted sealers and a bit of color theory. By applying negative colors to neutralize the underlying shade, it is possible to alter the hue of the masonry. However, it is important to keep in mind that the underlying color hue and porosity of the concrete can affect the final result in an unpredictable way. To ensure a successful recolor project, it is recommended to always test the stains and colors before beginning a large, costly project. Changing the Color of Stamped Concrete: Transforming an Ugly Orange Patio into a Beautiful Outdoor Space
Check out the before and after photos of this stamped concrete patio transformation by changing the color of the stamped concrete. The original orange color was unattractive and did not complement the surrounding landscape. Dan used a mix of black and charcoal Antiquing stains to create a deep dark color that slightly shows the previous orange color creating a natural look. The result is a beautiful and dramatic outdoor space that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Why does stamped concrete color fade?
Stamped concrete can fade over time due to exposure to the elements and lack of proper maintenance. If an adequate exterior seal is not applied and maintained, the color of the stamped concrete can fade as a result of direct exposure to sunlight, rain, and other weather conditions. In addition, the color of stamped concrete can fade if it was not applied correctly or if the wrong type of staining product was used. To prevent fading, it’s important to properly seal and maintain your stamped concrete, and to choose the right staining product based on the surface conditions of your concrete and the desired final result.
DIY Guide: Fixing Stamped Concrete Color Like a Pro
This project took longer than anticipated, but the results were worth it.
First, we stripped the old sealer using a specialized product and spent one week on this step alone. Next, we used ProClean Degreaser™ and allowed it to dry overnight. The sealing process took three days, with each layer drying overnight.
To achieve the desired look, we used Direct Colors’ Cumin Antiquing DIY Kit, Cumin Antiquing Stain & Seal Kit, Driftwood Antiquing Stain & Seal Kit, and Satin EasySeal (3 layers on very porous concrete).
Personal tips: Remember to remove all the filters from the pump-up sprayer to avoid clogging and try the samples in the Trial Kits before making your final color choices. This will give you a sense of how the color changes with each coat and how sealing affects the depth of the color. Trust Direct Colors’ products for easy and effective stamped concrete restoration.
